Match report 16.11.19
by Sean Boothe

Rochester United 1 (Reece Gillies 74’)
Meridian VP 0

Rochester United grabbed the 3 points in an exciting game for the neutral as Meridian’s stubborn resistance was eventually broken down by a single goal.

Meridian VP once again blooded another youngster in Alfie Leach who at the tender age of 16 years old made his senior debut. He partnered Jacob Skelly at the heart of the visitors defence and acquitted himself admirably. Meridian who have a number of squad members missing, still went into the game confident of getting a result.

Though the home side had the lion share of the possession, Meridian VP were very patient in regaining possession. When they did, the visitors tried to attack with speed to get in behind the home defence. Rochester had numerous half chances but Meridian probably had the three best chances of the half. First chance fell to Alfie Collins who failed to connect properly with a first time cross from Nick Chan after a glorious chance from Alfie Leach.

The next chance then fell to Alfie Leach with a near post header just wide from a corner. Jacob Skelly had a drive well saved by the keeper after Tim Moffatt tee’d up the shot from a quickly taken free kick.

HT 0-0

The second half was very much backs to the wall stuff as Rochester United felt the pressure to win this game in front of their crowd. Meridian VP was doing a good job frustrating the home team with some great defending from the back four of Abbas Oduncu, Alfie Leach, Jason Skelly and Aaron Clarke. Joe Richardson and Tim Moffatt were working hard to protect the defence with Jason Kaate and Brima Daramy putting pressure on the Rochester rearguard.

Meridian created two great chances in the second half with Jason Kaate and Nick Chan both going close with long range efforts. Dan Carpanini was outstanding and was only beaten by an unfortunate deflection in the 74th minute when Reece Gillies cut in from the left, played a one-two before hitting a shot of the heels of a defender to the relief of the home side.

Ben Ashton came on to replace Brima Daramy in the 77th minute and Meridian continued to try and grab an equaliser, but could not make the breakthrough. There were many positives in defeat and the team showed a fighting spirit that shall eventually gain the results they deserve.
