Meridian deserved better, finshing lacking today!!

Meridian FC welcomed Ashford United today along with their supporters bringing in Meridian’s biggest attendance this season.

Meridian moved quickly to start the game and looked very comfortable with good neat interchanges and discipline. Ashford with all their new faces looked on paper the stronger side but this was not apparent in the first 20 minutes of the game with good chances and attacking football played with chances created only for the goalkeeper saving the day for Ashford.

The game turned on its head on the 20 minute mark when all the hard, focused work was undone by an error from the defender in midfield as Ashford collected the ball and immediately attacked capitalising 0-1.

Immediately 2 minutes later another goal followed as Meridian still suffering from the shock of conceding were two goals down 0-2.

Changes made by Meridian soon after helped but Ashford now sensing the game being theirs pushed and on the 37 minute got their third, 0-3.

Going in at half time the score line was not the case of the first half, however Meridian came out stronger and more committed in the second half.

Ashford found it hard to contend with Meridian’s football where constant switching caused problems for their defence but only a good solid performance from their defence and goalkeeper thwarted any chances of Meridian scoring.

It was only on the 78 minute when the ball was cleared long by Ashford, Meridian conceded a corner. The resulting pattern of play was like a table tennis game where defending was not existent and finally after a good rally Ashford popped up to nod into the net 0-4.

Meridian deserved at least something from the 2nd half performance but it was not to be as Ashford saved the best to the last minute when again clearance was put forward to the winger who then in turn cut the ball back onto the edge of the penalty box only for the Ashford striker to score most probably this season in the Kent Invicta Football League the goal of the season with a great overhead kick showing technique and precision in the finish into the top right of Meridian’s goal 0-5.

Although Meridian did not play badly in this game the true difference was take your chances when they arise and you may succeed as Ashford truly did.

The match played in the right spirit and a good crowd all got value for money today.

Meridian will take note of this game and will not reflect too much as hard work will be required in two week’s time against our next opponents Sutton Athletic away 28th January 2012.
