Great work but no result as Meridian FC draw against Kent League side!!

Today was a test for Meridian FC with the visit of Erith Town FC Reserves, who had 6 first team players in their squad for the friendly fixture.

Meridian were determined to make amends to the mistakes that cost us dearly against Charlton Athletic Community and it did not take long as expected for the visitors to assert themselves being Kent League opposition.

Meridian started the brighter frustrating the opposition by pressing the play back towards Erith culminating in opposition players making mistakes under pressure thus Meridian creating several chances.

It was against the run of play when one attack from an error made on Meridian’s left allowed a long through ball to Erith Town forward Hubbard who slotted the ball into the net under pressure.

Meridian took ten minutes to revived themselves after being shell shocked with several changes made and soon after paid dividends with Meridian pushing forward only to be awarded a free kick to the right of midfield.

Up stepped Kyle Burt who delivered a telling cross, only for Yovonno Otto to pop in and head the ball into the left of the goal.

Meridian felt justified with the equaliser and started to assert but credit must be given to the opposition for making it very difficult for Meridian by the simple football they were displaying as it was a pleasure to watch at times.

Eventually Erith managed to score another goal from an error from midfield with again Hubbard turning the Meridian defender and hitting it instantly making it 2-1 at half time.

Meridian came out in the second half with again new players looking to impress the management team and changes made.

Erith still on a high from the second goal soon started to find it difficult to deal with Meridian as the shape and discipline now started to show keeping Erith under control and at bay.

Good performance from Yovonno Otto who ran every blade of grass on the pitch making himself busy and unselfish for the team.

His determination and will to win eventually created the equaliser as the ball was played through the middle of the park and out to the right wing with a good delivery and popping in was debutant Samuel who scored his first goal for his new club, 2-2.

Meridian grew with great confidence throughout the second half and kept pushing for the win keeping Erith on the back foot. The winner finally came as a free kick was awarded to Meridian on the left of the midfield and again a good telling delivery from Yovonno Otto in the right area was saved from the goalkeeper and followed up by Samuel.

The third goal was not to be as the referee consulted with the linesman who flagged for offside as another player came into play who was in an offside position prior to the kick being taken.

The game finished with a draw 2-2 and on reflection both teams would agree that the result was a fair one with the good workout required for the start of both teams football season.

It was encouraging and to receive a compliment from Erith Town FC manager James Collins who stated that “Meridian have a good team and are one of the better teams they have played, you will surprise a few clubs”.

Meridian FC look forward to their last friendly fixture against Erith & Belvedere Reserves next Saturday 13th August 2011, KO 3PM, before the season opener on the 20th August 2011 against Rusthall FC.
