Buildbase FA Vase First Qualifying Round
Sunday 1st September 2019

Meridian were defeated in the First Qualifying Round of FA Vase, in a tight contest by a wily Hassocks side who on the balance of play deserved to progress in the Competition.

In the first half an hour, Hassocks took control of proceedings and were getting forward quickly into they forward line. This was met with stubborn resistance by Meridian’s defence of Harvey Brinkley, Michael Ade, Martin Begg and Jacob Skelly. Martin Begg in particular was having a personal battle with their number 10, which saw his name eventually go into the Referee’s book.

Meridian fashioned out two very good chances the best falling to Douane West who had a free header from about 8 yards but couldn’t keep it on target. Hassocks only chance of note came as early as the second minute when a goal line scramble saw us manage to keep the ball out of the net from a couple of attempts, before going up the other end with a chance just wide of the goal.

The game lacked flow as Hassocks were appealing for a foul under virtual every challenge which frustrated the home side and made it impossible to get any sort of rhythm in their play.

Meridian started the second half well and looked to play with slightly more purpose and were far sharper than they were in the first. Scott Taylor was replaced by Jerome Richards who injected some much needed pace into the home side. The game opened up slightly as the substitute started to break lines and run at the opposition which was causing them problems. But the sucker punch arrived in the 67th minute when a pass from midfield into one of the Hassocks forwards looked as if he received the ball in an offside position. He in turn passed into the path of Jamie Hollywood who also looked offside, to squeeze his shot over the advancing Ben Ashton.

Hassocks got a second goal in the 76th minute when Jack Troak managed to ride two challenges before toe poking his shot into the near post from an acute angle. Michael Ade was injured when challenging for the ball and was replaced by Dan Akintimehin and Micah Banton was replaced by Joe Richardson not long after. The second goal was a bridge to far for the home side, and was enough to secure Hassocks place in the next round of the Cup.
