*** Good Start To The New Year Working Off The Festive Calories ***

Well my football fix took me over to Meridian VP last night to see them play Eltham Palace in the Kent Invicta League.
In freezing conditions both teams contributed to an entertaining game with plenty of goalmouth action. Palace had a great opportunity to take the lead when following great work by Humes on the right his pass set up their striker nicely but his effort curled over the bar….MVP were to capatalise and took the lead. When, following a ball into the Palace box their defence failed to clear the ball and Tommy Leggett followed up with a low finish. Further chances fell to Dominic Elmes who headed over from 6 yards from an Adrian Brown corner. Then Brown whose pace was troubling Palaces backline broke through but his finish lacked conviction and he shot wide. Elmes was also just wide with a long ranger.

Palace continued to press forward themselves with Humes on the right their main threat his battle with the MVP left back was good to watch both players up for the game and battling for the ball fairly.

Palace almost snatched an equaliser when they had a free kick from the half way line. Whilst the ball was in the air it caught a gust of wind and flew like a rocket. As it came down it struck the crossbar and was cleared.

In the second half both teams again applied themselves well in tricky conditions. MVP pushing forward well and Humes taking the game towards the home side. MVP’s second goal came as a result of a good play by Brown his direct run across the Palace backline teed up Elmes who fired home from 30 yards with a low finish to the keepers right. MVP were to score again quickly when Brown again went at the Palace defence and fired a shot which the keeper saved with his legs. However, Chris McDermott was on hand to slot home the rebound. Palace looked like they were going to buckle at this point but they held their reserve and held out despite MVP ‘s best intentions. Brown had their best chance when his goal bound effort was cleared off the line by the very busy Palace centre half.

The away side enjoyed some limited success but apart from the hardworking Humes they lacked conviction going forward and wasted their best chances. Maybe their efforts deserved a goal but MVP remained solid and Ashton in goal dealt well with any shots or crosses that were fired at him.

FT MVP 3 Eltham Palace 0

All in all glad though I went along it was good to be back at the MVP stadium.

Thanking Sporting Outpost !!
