Meridian Move Into The Semi's With Great Display !!

Meridian took a break from league duties today with an away Erith Hospitals Charity Cup fixture against Viewpoint FC who currently are riding on top of their league in the Rochester & District Premier Division, unbeaten!

Meridian started well and knew that today was about carrying on the performance level shown against Ashford Utd last Saturday.

Meridian’s midfield started to dominate the passage of play which eventually created several chances within the first 15 minutes where the game should have been closed off at four nil.

However, credit to the home side who showed grit and determination which stifled Meridian's pattern of play.

It was only when a free kick was awarded for the bringing down of Darren Flaherty on the 34 minute did the same player pick himself up and deliver the perfect kick which nestled into the bottom right corner, 0-1.

The home side now at sixes and seven tried to push forward and showed that they too could play football when a neat attack on Meridian’s right was dealt with by the defence only to bring down the home striker for a dubious penalty. This was taken and slotted away to level the game, 1-1.

The level of performance, attitude & concentration simply was not the required standard in the first half, as the management clearly put their point across at the interval.

The effect was immediate, as on the 48 minute a free kick award to Meridian on the edge of the box was converted by Junior James, 1-2.

Meridian on the ascendancy never looked back as they went up the gears and now started to control the game. On the 53rd minute the hard work of Ronnie Bonsra who assisted in a great through ball to Duwayne Morris and without hesitation unleashed a superb shot at 25 yards straight into the roof of the net, 1-3.

Changes made due to a heavy ground on a sub-standard pitch proved to be the icing on the cake as on the 66 minute Ronnie Bonsra again assisted on the left with a delightful pull back with the on-coming Michael Kyere who just had come on, without thought struck his shot from 18 yards into the goal, 1-4.

The game never looked in doubt has Meridian made sure that they would be in the hat for the semi- final of this cup competition when on the 75 minute Darren Flaherty delivered a perfectly whipped in corner and with good movement with almost his first touch of the game since entering the field of play moments earlier Darryl Francis met the cross at the near post glancing it straight in goalkeeper no chance, 1-5.

It was clearly abundant that Meridian FC were not going to make the same mistake as last year against the same opposition, who went on to win this competition.

Meridian move forward striving to improve and keep the level of performance ever increasing week on week.

Next week’s fixture is the BIG Home derby against our home rivals Bridon Ropes FC KO 2PM.
