Good Result With The Aid of Major Squad Changes!

A confident and organised looking Woodstock FC side arrived to face Meridian who fielded a much changed side from the winning team from the previous week. With only four players who started last week`s game starting today (Jamie Brinkley, Gurdy Tamna, Dorian Smith, Duwayne Morris).

As the game started, the opposition appeared not to be prepared for the six pointer and the energy output and team ethic from the home team. With pressure applied on the Meridian player`s shoulders they have realised that competition for places in the squad either on the bench or starting and the necessity to achieve the three points cannot be taken lightly especially after the good result last week coupled with weeks of good performances coming to fruition.

Meridian`s Trevor Charley (TJ) and Darren Flaherty (Shoulders) set the pace for the rest to follow, with numerous piercing driving runs at the oppositions defence which soon paid dividends.

On the 8th minute a goal, which started with a sublime link up play from Meridian defence, through to the midfield and moved on with a quality through ball to Darren Flaherty on the left wing with work still to be done with the opposition defender shadowing alongside him managed to create the space required to deliver the inch perfect cross finding the oncoming and determined TJ leaping above all to connect with the cross and direct the ball to the left of the keeper, who`s futile dive did not stop the ball from resting in the back of the net, 1-0.

Meridian FC did not rest on their laurels even though the lead had been taken. Woodstock FC kept trying to test Meridian at every opportunity but Meridian`s resolute defence played with a degree of professionalism with very little unforced errors. Even though the opposition put Meridian under pressure from their forward line it was pleasing to see that Meridian were able to keep the ball and complete a pass that turned defence to attack. Dorian Smith showed composure and calm when needed most together with showing the confidence on the ball as all players should be.

It was only on the 26th minute Darren Flaherty who was alert and reacted quickest after latching onto a deflected ball rounded the keeper carrying the ball slightly to far left as the opportunity looked like it had disappeared with a tight angle, but only Darren`s peripheral vision allowed him to see the oncoming defenders and slotted away Meridian`s second, 2-0.

Meridian`s bench and crowd went crazy with happiness, joy and relief feeling that at this point of the game there was an air of confidence and a positive result was in the making.

As the second half commenced the visiting team found their feet with the few chances created coming close resulting in scrambles in the Meridian goal area.

With the opposition`s forward line being caught offside several time this did not help their cause, together with again it must be said resolute defending with some exceptional last ditch blocks.

The game started to open up as Meridian created but failed in their attempt to finish off the opposition with the end product missing.

Credit must be given to both teams in this half has it was an end to end dual. Even with changes carried out by Meridian, the substitutes made an instant impact and hit the ground running as another well created chance came to Sam Adebanjo going close and hitting the cross bar.

Meridian`s work rate and team ethic was good to see with energy, enthusiasm in abundance coupled with the belief and the will to win!

As the final whistle blew there was a delightful feeling of having back to back victories and the well-deserved hard fought result, 2-0.

A management note for this report was the appreciation of the squad of players at Meridian FC who are now starting to evolve and work together.
